Town Information

Karlovo is the home-town of the Apostle of Bulgarian Freedom - Vasil Levski and is situated 58 km away from the town of Plovdiv and 150 km east from the city of Sofia. It is a regional center for the Strema Rose Valley.

Exhibition Area 800 m²

The sections Archeology, Ethnography, Revival period and small part of the section New Bulgarian history are included in the exhibition of the Museum.

One can trace the history of Karlovo region in the exhibition since Prehistory, through Ancient times and Middle ages.

The Revival period section displays a number of documents and objects from the economic, culture and community life of this sub-Balkan town. It is also presented the activity of the most eminent teachers and Revival period figures from the town of Karlovo, for example d-r Ivan Bogorov - the publisher of the first Bulgarian newspaper "Bulgarian Eagle", the biggest donators in the Bulgarian history- the brothers Hristo and Evlogi Georgievs, and others.

In the ethnographic section are gathered and exhibited interesting collections of fabrics, garments, jewellery, national customs, instruments of the old crafts- braids making, weaving, goldsmith, rose growing, etc. The participation of Karlovo region in the wars for National Freedom is also presented.

Founder -

The Historical Museum Karlovo is situated in the building of an old Bulgarian school, built in 1871. The building is one of the most representative architectural and historical monuments from the age of the Bulgarian Revival period. There are 2 floors with total area pf 800 sq.m. It is situated in the southern part of the town in a resident area with preserved architecture from the age of Bulgarian National Revival period.

The museum was opened as in its present form in 1987. The reason for its opening was the display of Community Center Museum exhibition in 1902. In 1952 was is reformed as a state institute.

The museum has 4 Sections: Archeology, Ethnography, Revival Period and New and Newest Bulgarian History.

The museum has a library and a counter for souvenirs.
