The Museum was established in 1923 by the teacher Nikola Koichev. His aim is to research, preserve, publish and make exhibitions of real-estate monuments of culture, as well as of excavated objects. Of great importance are the undertaken excavations in the settlement mound- the village of Kranevo in the period 1936-1937 and 1946-1957.
Additional research was undertaken in the Dipsizka settlement mound in the period 1961-1971.
Excavations in the settlement mound in the village of Dyadovo have been started since 1983.
The Nova Zagora Museum is the only one in the country, which receives 2 international archaeological expeditions, one of them has been carried out since 1984, that of the Bulgarian- Austrian settlement mound in the village of Karanovo, and will continue until 2011.
The Bulgarian- Japanese expedition in the settlement mound in the village of Dyadovo, continues as a joint project even today.
The museum participated in a number of international exhibitions, displaying objects, which have no analogue not only in Bulgaria, but in Europe as well.
However all the difficulties the country undergoes in the last ten years, the museum didn't seize to develop in a favourable direction.
During the last years 2 new archaeological bases were built and in the end of September 1997 a new archaeological exposition was opened. Computerization of the museum was implemented.
