The museum collection includes more than 23 000 objects, among which are: archaeological findings from the town region and the surrounding settlements (most outstanding among these are the Pre-historical bronze plastics, marble votive tablets with images of Thracian Gods and Greek-Roman pantheon, findings discovered during excavations of late ancient fortress "Kovachevsko kale", excavated by the Museum together the "St. Cyril and St. Methodius" Veliko Tarnovo University; Revival icons and old printed books, items connected with the economic, political, enlightening and culture life in the small town; works of art of Bulgarian painters and of local authors.

The organized gathering of old objects in Popovo started in 1926, when the archaeological association was established in the town. The archaeological monuments gathered by the association were stored for many years in the local Community Center "St. Cyril and St. Methodius", on the ground floor, when on 8 September 1957, a museum exhibition was opened, tracing the history of the region since ancient times until middle XX century. This date is supposed to be the beginning of the existence of the museum collection in Popovo.
In 1978 a new exhibition was arranged, but now in a specially consigned for the purpose building. It was built in 1983 year for the regional management, and afterwards it was used by the High school and other schools in the town. Since 1991 the Community center museum collection turns to a Historical Museum. Today's exhibition is opened on 02 March 1995 and is set up on a 350 sq.m. area. In a separate building an ethnographic exhibition is arranged.
Periodically the museum organizes scientific conferences on topic "Popovo and the past", and the materials are issued in a series of volumes with the same title. |
