Town Information

The city of Veliko Tarnovo is situated in the Central Northern Bulgaria and has unique natural and architectural sights. It was the capital of Bulgaria during the 12-14th centuries, and it was one of the leading centers of the fights for national liberation and cultural independence during the Revival period. After the liberation the first session of the new Bulgarian Parliament was held in this town, and the independence of Bulgaria was declared in 1908.

The Prison in Veliko Tarnovo was built in the middle of XIX century. In 1854 it was already actively functioning. It was used as a prison until 1954. In the period until the Liberation, Filip Totyu, Stefan Karadja, Vasil Levski, Todor Kableshkov, Bacho Kiro, Georgi Izmirliev have all been in the prison. The building consists of a ground floor and two upper floors, two yards are fenced with stone walls and the Camp, which was built in 1872.

Museum History

Founder -

The opening of the first museum exhibition was in April 1960. Rearrangements in the exhibition contents bacame necessary due to the political changes in 1989. The daily exhibition was opened for visitors on 18 July 2005. The exhibition area takes up the ground floor and the first floor. The common room and the lock-up cell for torture in the basement and three other cells on the first floor are restored in their XIX century authentic style.
