Town Information

Sliven is a town with rich cultural and historical past.
Thracians, Slavs, Greeks and Romans have left bright traces. During the Middle Ages the town was a Christian centre – the Little Sliven Mount Athos.
During the Bulgarian National Revival the town took a first-rate place in the Ottoman Empire as a centre of the growing industry.
The archaeological complexes Kabile and Karanovo are 30 kilometers south from Sliven.
The towns of the Bulgarian National Revival Period - Jeravna and Kotel are 70 kilometers north from Sliven.

There are two permanent exhibitions in the hall “Sirak Skitnik” - “CHRISTIAN ART” and “CONTEMPORARY BULGARIAN ART”
The permanent exposition “Christian Art” was opened in 2005. It consists of icons, engravings, church plate, wood-carving and stone plastic arts from the region of Sliven from ХVІІІ till ХІХ century. Icons by the representatives of the Tryavna art school: Papa Vitan, Simeon Tzoniuv, Yoanikii papa Vitanov, Crastiu Zahariev, Angel Tzoniuv, Yordan Mihailovich, Nedko Teodorovich, etc., are included in the exposition.
The permanent exposition “Modern Bulgarian Art” represents the modern Bulgarian art from ХІХ century till now. The exhibition includes: landscapes, drawings and sculptures. The works of the artist of the Bulgarian National Revival Dimitar Dobrovich take a central position in the exposition. The beginning of the art collection in Sliven is set with the above mentioned works in 1905. The exposition follows the main stages of the development of the Bulgarian art from its secular beginning till nowadays, which is represented by the most brilliant creators: Yordan Kiuvliev, Alexander Bojinov, Nicola Mihailov, Elena Karamihailova, Elisaveta Konsulova – Vazova, Nicola Tanev, Sirak Skitnik, Ivan Milev, Vladimir Dimitrov – the Master, Nicolai Rainov, Kiril Petrov, Bencho Obreshkov, Stoian Venev, Nenko Balkanski, Boris Denev, Zlatiu Boiadzhiev, David Peretz, Vassil Barakov, Ivan Nenov, Dechko Uzunov, etc.

The beginning of today’s art gallery was set in 1905 with the testament of the artist of the Bulgarian National Revival Dimitar Dobrovich. The beginning of the museum work in the town was also set with it. The collection is an art department to the Historical Museum during 1930s. It is established as an independent cultural institute with the official name “Art Gallery Dimitar Dobrovich” and with a separate building for permanent exposition in 1965.
Now the Gallery consists of three separate objects, in which there are 4 permanent exhibitions: “Foreign Art” /13 Tzar Osvoboditel Blvd./, “The Old Sliven” /10 Mirkovich St./, “Christian Art” and “Modern Bulgarian Art” /2 Tzar Simeon Blvd./. The Gallery is in possession of 6000 works, including Christian art /icons, engravings, church plate/, modern Bulgarian art /landscapes, drawings, sculptures/, foreign art /West European drawings ХІХ – ХХ century and Japanese engravings “ukio-e” ХVІІІ – ХІХ century/.
