The town of Smolyan is situated in the beautiful valley of Central Rhodopi Mountains, at 1000m above the sea level. The incredible combination of old and new architecture, gives the town unique charm. According to the experts, here are situated some of the best architectural samples of the Revival period in Bulgaria (XIX c.). The Pangalova House is one such impressive example, built in 1860 year. |

Orpheus is the the name, which this gallery could have, because of the numerous sculptures, graphical and mural paintings, dedicated to the mythical singer, if it was not the good number of canvases, connected with other esthetic plastic problems, not less impressive and complicated.
More than 250 works of art of authors from other countries are preserved in the international department of the gallery. These are mainly works from the International Plain air - Smolyan, which is held since 1980.
The exhibition activity of the gallery includes hundreds of common and individual exhibitions, held in small settlements in the region, as well as in prestige galleries in the country and abroad.
Today, in a time of hardships in our lives and souls, the works of fine art, collected in the Art Gallery in Smolyan, could bring back the harmony and spiritual ness back into the hearts of people, as no human civilization could exist without them. |

It is a gallery, which has gathered in its collection works of all generation of Bulgarian painters from 30-es until nowadays, as well as of many authors around the world, who came to make painting in the Rhodopi mountains, and now there us a good occasion to present the best of its funds.
Unnoticeably, 35 years since the first exhibition have passed, in which only a few tens of canvases were displayed. The time, which has passed was enough for an institution with all the components of museum activities to be built up- exhibition halls, collection rooms, science archive, restoration workshops, photo laboratory. And the most important, a team of professionals, who has matured in the process of their work, was also gathered.
By active and focused research and collective activities, the gallery has established its specific appearance. It is defined by the works, whose authors were inspired by the Rhodopi region - ancient traditions and legends, the landscape, the unique atmosphere. |
