Stara Zagora Museum was established on 28 May 1907. In the same year the first exhibition was opened. The first systematic archaeological excavations in Stara Zagora region started in 1911. Many monuments, connected with the history of the town and the surrounding areas were gathered.
In the end of 1949, the museum was announced to be state museum, and in 1 January 1953 was announced tube regional museum and take the functions of a scientific and methodical center of the museums in the region. Intensive historical research started, the number of the objects in the collections increased, the structure of the museum was established. Planning and rescue excavations of objects were undertaken, and these became world-known. The Azamashka settlement mound, Thracian villa - rustika at Chatalka damp, the Halkolit copper pits in the Mechi kladenets region (Aibunar).
As a result of the research, the Stara Zagora Historical Museum possesses one of the richest pre-historical collection in the world, interesting collections of ancient bronze and ancient glass, numismatic collections of local and imported coins, preserved remnants from more than 30 Thracian chariots. Research of the folklore and customs in Stara Zagora region has been undertaken. Unique materials for the cultural, economical and political life of the town and the vicinities from the Revival period until nowadays have been gathered and preserved in the museum collection - Regional history. .
