Access to Museum

From nearby Regional Center to Town
Convenient highways and railways reach Targovishte from the following main directions: Sofia-Varna and Rousse-Yambol. The town of Targovishte is situated on the international road E-722, which in its four-lane construction is known as the highway "Hemus."

From Bus Station/Railway Station in Town

The town of Targovishte is the center of the Targovishte Region. The museum is located in the old "Varosh" neighborhood, which is close to the city center and the highway between Sofia and Varna.

From the bus station and the railway station: route taxi No. 3 or 10, up to bus stop "Briasta" which is in an immediate vicinity of the museum.

The museum has 3 main exhibition collections. The archaeological collection, which represents the Targovishte region from the Neolithic period until the Medieval times, is exhibited in the building of the ex-high school "Hadji Rusi"(1907). The Ethnographical collection is exhibited in the House of Hadji Angel (1863). The House-Museum "Nikola Simov - Kruto" is dedicated to this famous Bulgarian revolutionary and flag carrier of the Botev's group. The temporary exhibitions of the museum are arranged in the front hall of the High school "St. St. Seven Saints" (1863).

"Hadji Angelova" House Museum

The activities of the Museum in Targovishte region date back to 20-es of XX century, since when information is found on the studies of local history and small school museum collections existed, which were maintained by enthusiastic school teachers in the town of Targovishteand and the bigger settlements in the region. The decision for a museum to be established was taken on in 1951. People work on communal base.

Since 1953 a permanent museum exhibition has been opened. The first collections gathered at that time, became the main part of the collection of the Regional Historical Museum in Targovishte, which has been an independent institute since 1960. Since then systematic research and popularization of the history of Targovishte region has been undertaken.

A rich museum collection was formed with more than 30 000 museum objects, material and documentary monuments from the Neolithic ages (VII century B.C.) until nowadays. Among them there are unique collections and valuables (Neolithic rite scene from the village of Ovcharovo, golden Thracian treasure from the village of Kralevo, etc.), which have been displayed in a grand national museum exhibitions in the country and abroad.

During the 5 decades of its existence, the Museum team of the Historical Museum in the town of Targovishte researches the multiple archaeological objects, undertakes tens of expeditions on complex research of the Targovishte region. Currently the Historical Museum Targovishte is a Municipal Museum. It undertakes research on the territory of the Targovishte region.
